The oldest mountaineering school
A mountaineering destination for decades
Pontresina is home to both the oldest and still today the largest mountaineering school in Graubünden, and the Pontresina Mountain Guide Association, which was founded in 1871 as the third mountain guide association in Switzerland. With 94 current members, it still reflects the original endeavor of climbing the summits of the ice and snow giants in the Bernina Massif.
The Mountain Guide Association not only provides mountain-guide services, but is also involved in inspecting high routes for safety, and installing safety equipment such as markings and chains. They also invest heavily in training guests and the next generation of mountain guides. In July 2021, the association celebrated its 150th anniversary, an event that honored the long-standing importance of mountaineering in the Engadine.
