Natural stone Bodio Nero

The Dark Ticino Gneiss

The dark gray, fine slate gneiss “Bodio Nero” is sourced from the quarry near Bodio. Each piece of this natural stone is unique, with its own distinct color, pattern, and veining. This uniqueness can be felt in Hotel Maistra, where the stone is prominently featured as a key material.

Stone & History

The name “Bodio Nero” is derived from its place of origin, Bodio, and the characteristic black color of the rock, with “nero” meaning black in Italian. The stone’s dark glimmer comes from its high biotite content, while fine beige titanite grains add a unique touch to its pattern. The rock’s excellent construction properties have been appreciated since ancient times, with early settlers using Bodio Nero for building homes and religious structures.

Mining & Processing

Over a decade ago, the family-owned business Ongaro Graniti resumed the extraction of the renowned Bodio Nero stone. Founded in 1930 and now in its third generation, the company specializes in the mining and high-quality processing of natural stone. The extraction process involves a combination of explosive techniques and diamond wire saws. Once mined, the Bodio Nero is cut to size using milling machines, and its surface is expertly finished with a variety of flame and polishing machines, as well as edge grinders, further highlighting the stone’s exceptional quality and appearance.

Finishing & onward journey

After being meticulously processed at Ongaro Graniti, the prized Bodio Nero is assembled on-site into the columns that will play a significant role in Hotel Maistra’s architecture. Once completed, these columns embark on their journey from the neighboring region of Ticino to Pontresina and the Maistra construction site
