For me, an idea is strong when its implementation brings happiness to as many people as possible. This sense of “happiness” can take on many forms in architectural expression. The greatest challenge in design is always finding the “good idea” – something overarching and, in a way, metaphysical. The idea shouldn’t be overly specific or rigidly defined. On one hand, it must offer plenty of flexibility, while on the other, its boundaries should still be perceptible. If the idea becomes too narrowly focused, it risks turning into a fixed fact – and facts can hinder the pursuit of a more holistic approach (assuming such a comprehensive approach exists).
The work on an idea begins with the very first thoughts and continues until the completion of the project. Throughout this process, the idea is examined from a variety of perspectives; the goal is for it to evolve and become more refined. This journey, from the initial concept to handing over the keys, requires patience and perseverance. When, as with Maistra 160, the client is an integral part of this process, the chances of success are greatly improved.
In his book Philosophy and the Event, Alain Badiou provides a powerful metaphor for testing an idea: “You reach the idea by leaving the cave, but you must go back into the cave to illuminate it with the idea.” Badiou refers to Plato’s allegory of the cave, emphasizing that once an idea is discovered, it must be reexamined and applied in the context from which it originated.
Dream, longing, and hospitality are the core concepts behind the vision of Maistra 160. The hotel aims to enrich each guest’s stay, transforming it into a joyful and unforgettable experience. Despite significant shifts in hotel architecture in the Engadine, these foundational ideas have remained constant. The evolution has been remarkable, spanning from the grand, ornate hotels of the Belle Époque through tradition-based local regionalism (driven by the homeland protection movement) to the functional architecture of the modern era, starting in the 1970s. Maistra 160 continues this legacy, blending innovative architecture with a thoughtfully created, enriching guest experience.
Maistra is designed to be a hotel that enhances each guest’s stay through exceptional offerings and top-tier hospitality, creating a joyful and unforgettable experience. Beyond that, Hotel Maistra is more than just a destination for travelers – it is also a cultural asset for Pontresina
