What exactly is a terrazzo floor?

Terrazzo floors are created from pebbles of a variety of sizes and colors, often broken, resulting in endless color combinations, all drawn from local materials. These pebbles are set into a fine-mesh curved sieve and bound with a binding agent. When finely ground, terrazzo adds a unique elegance to any space.

Christian Aubry, a passionate stone sculptor, developed a custom color concept for Maistra 160 using stones and hues from the mountains surrounding Pontresina. He spent days exploring the Bernina region, sourcing stones that, when ground into pigments, produce a wide range of colors. These pigments can even be used to color mineral house plaster, directly reflecting the regional landscape. The Bernina-inspired colors for Hotel Maistra were developed in collaboration with color specialist Lucrezia Zanetti from Farbkunst Graubünden. This approach combines craftsmanship with the careful processing of raw materials, using time-honored techniques from the local building tradition.

The workshop, which encompasses stone carving, carpentry, and lime creations, is dedicated to preserving and practicing the region’s traditional crafts. As a skilled stone sculptor, stonemason, lime worker, and carpenter, Aubry places foremost importance on immersing himself in the time-honored techniques of local building traditions, ensuring their continued relevance and value in modern craftsmanship.
