Urushi Lacquer Technique: A Fascinating, Millennia-Old Craft from the Far East
In this workshop, you will experience the hotel in a special way! You will learn a rare craft technique that also played a role in the design of your hotel room: Fuki Urushi. Surface gloss made from precious natural material.
The Asian “Urushi” sap from the Urushi no Ki lacquer tree is a precious material that can only be harvested in small quantities. Even the production of the raw material requires careful treatment of nature.
In addition to the craftwork, you will gain insights into the ancient and rich lacquer culture of Japan, China, and Korea. Discover what makes this craft so special!
Tip: During your next stay, take a look at the shimmering surface of the washbasins in the bathroom!

Salome Lippuner is one of the few experts in Europe who has been trained in the various techniques of this lacquer craft.

Program to follow
Workshop I: Wood
Thu 20 - Sat 23.8.2026
In this course with artist Salome Lippuner, you will learn the technique of fuki urushi, or wiped lacquer. You will pigment and lacquer turned objects. Experimenting with simple decoration techniques using silver leaf and mother-of-pearl mosaic is also part of the course.
At the end of the workshop, you will take home not only your own work of art, but also wonderful memories.
Workshop II: Leather

Immerse yourself in the world of Shippi Urushi – Urushi on leather, which can be admired at
Hotel Maistra 160 on the large sliding door to the library and
on some tables. This application of the sap of the
Urushi lacquer tree is little known in Europe and is also
rarely used in Japan.
We varnish various leathers, which we cut to size to make bookmarks.
We playfully try out different textures and shapes, perhaps to match your favorite book or as a gift.
We learn various decoration techniques with materials
such as gold and silver leaf, apply metal powder or
mother-of-pearl, or paint motifs in colored pigmented
urushi with fine brushes.
At the end of the course, you will take home some personal, magnificently decorated
bookmarks and impressions of a very ancient
craft that was previously a closed book to you.
