Urushi-Workshop with Salome Lippuner

27 - 30 November 2025

Urushi Lacquer Technique: A Fascinating, Millennia-Old Craft from the Far East

The Asian lacquer “Urushi” – sap from the Urushi no Ki lacquer tree – is a precious material that grows in orchards and can only be harvested in small quantities. The production of this raw material requires careful handling of nature. Urushi is resistant to acids and alkalis, withstands heat over 100°C, remains elastic, and is relatively scratch-resistant.

In the course led by artist Salome Lippuner, you will learn the technique of Fuki Urushi, or wiped lacquer – the simplest application method, which guests have already encountered on the shimmering surfaces in the bathrooms of Hotel Maistra. You will pigment and lacquer one or more turned bowls using Fuki Urushi. Alongside the hands-on work, participants will gain insight into the ancient and rich lacquer culture of Japan, China, and Korea: a possibly unknown world unfolds.
